The fertility rate in the United States has been declining for the past few decades.  The fertility rate is the number of children an average woman bears over the course of her life. The replacement rate is 2.1. If the average woman has more children than that, population grows. Today, America's total fertility rate is 1.93, according to the latest figures from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention; it hasn't been above the replacement rate in a sustained way since the early 1970s.

Infertility is defined as the inability to become pregnant after a year or more of sperm insemination or well-timed, unprotected vaginal intercourse. Infertility may be a temporary or a permanent condition; this depends on the available treatments, the cause, and the fertility of the partner at any particular point in time.

Infertility is often incorrectly considered "the woman's problem". To improve the couple's chances of conception a child together, both the man and the woman should be evaluated, and treated, if necessary, Because conception is a complicated process, it depends upon several factors.

There are many potential causes for infertility or reproductive problems.  Chronic illnesses, as well as their treatments, can lead to fertility problems.  Illnesses like diabetes and hypothyroidism can cause fertility problems. Insulin, antidepressants, and thyroid hormones may lead to irregular menstrual cycles, for example.  Premature ovarian failure has become a common cause of infertility in younger women, often diagnosed as “unexplained infertility”.

Environmental toxins and xenoestrogens in foods are known to cause hormone disruption, and free radical damage to both ovaries in women and sperm production in men.  Certain toxins such as phthalates may be linked to genital abnormalities in boys. Products that contain phthalates include food packaging, cosmetics, make-up, soaps, fragrances, shampoos, hairspray, nail polish, pharmaceuticals, nutritional supplements, herbal remedies, building materials, vinyl flooring, paints, adhesives, detergents, solvents, lubricating oils, plastic bags, garden hoses, automobiles, children’s toys, modeling clay, glow sticks, cleaning products, and as inert ingredients in insecticides. In many instances phthalates are not identified on product labels.

40% of infertility can be due to male factors, and acupuncture also treats male partners of women trying to conceive. Medication used to treat peptic ulcers or hypertension can cause male factor infertility, including problems with sperm production or their ability to fertilize the egg.  In men, average sperm concentration went from 72 million/ml in 2001 to 52 million/ml in 2011. When sperm concentration drops below 40 million/ml, conception becomes difficult. Researchers agree that diet, lifestyle, and exposure to chemicals are causing the worldwide decline. Fertility issues are environmental issues

Couples experiencing difficulty conceiving may be referred to a fertility specialist for evaluation.  Typically, blood testing, genetic testing, and sperm testing are done to determine if there are any medical or hormonal abnormalities that need to be treated.

Currently, there are several medical treatments for infertility performed by MDs who specialize in Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART).  These treatments are typically hormones to induce ovulation, IUI or intrauterine insemination, which is a procedure in which sperm are placed directly into the uterine cavity near the time of ovulation and IVF, or in-vitro fertilization, which is a procedure that involves retrieving eggs and sperm from the bodies of the male and female partners and placing them together in a laboratory dish to enhance fertilization. Fertilized eggs are then transferred several days later into the female partner's uterus where implantation and embryo development will hopefully occur as in a normal pregnancy.

Success rates with IUI can vary from 5% to 20% for a single cycle, depending on the age and health of the couple.   With several IUI cycles, the conception rate can be even higher. According to the American Pregnancy Association, the success rate of conception with IVF is 10%-35%, again depending on the age and health status of the couple. Both IUI and IVF procedures can cost several thousand dollars per cycle or treatment, and are not always covered by insurance.

From the viewpoint of Traditional Chinese Acupuncture and Naturopathic Medicine, other factors contributing to infertility include imbalances in the energy meridians of the body, toxic overload, and lifestyle factors such as poor diet, stress, and lack of proper sleep.

Acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine are affordable therapies that have been used safely and effectively alongside with IUI and IVF, as well as a stand-alone treatment for infertility. Studies have shown that acupuncture can improve the success rate of IVF by 40%-60%.  The typical cost for an Acupuncture session is only $85.00.

Los Angeles Times (latimes.com) - Study Upholds Breast Cancer Mortality For Hormone Replacement -(Saturday, March 30, 2013)

In the nearly 11 years since researchers first rang alarm bells that women on hormone replacement therapy faced an increased risk of breast cancer, some have suggested that taking estrogen and progestin to treat symptoms of menopause might not be so dangerous after all.

Though it was generally agreed that woman who took the two hormones to curb their hot flashes and night sweats upped their chances of developing the disease, many studies suggested that the cancers the women developed were less likely to be deadly.

A new analysis of data from the Women's Health Initiative now casts doubt on those findings. The study, published Friday by the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, concludes that the prognosis for cancers related to hormone replacement therapy is just as dire as for other breast cancers. As a result, women who turn to the treatment are more likely to die of breast cancer than their peers who don't take hormones.

When comprehensive lifestyle changes are offered as treatment (not just as prevention), significant cost savings occur in the because the biological mechanisms that control our health and well-being are so dynamic.

Recent studies have shown that angioplasties and stents do not prolong life or prevent heart attacks in stable patients, costing $60 billion per year.

Type 2 diabetes and pre-diabetes will affect half of Americans in the next eight years at a projected cost of $3.3 trillion. Lowering blood sugar with drugs does not fully prevent the economic and human costs of diabetes (including heart attacks, strokes, amputations, impotence, kidney failure, and blindness), but lowering blood sugar with diet and lifestyle prevents all of these human and economic costs.

An unhealthy lifestyle means more illness and more expense to treat those illnesses. This means a bigger burden on an already challenged healthcare system. Poor health also means more time lost at work, less quality recreational time, and even shorter lifespans.

The good news is that all of these lifestyle changes may be reversible and not at a great cost. Remember that changing your unhealthy lifestyle to a healthy one will lower your risk for cardiovascular disorders, diabetes, cancer, and other diseases.

We live in a world with increasing toxic exposures many sources; the air we breathe, the water we drink, the chemicals in our food, body products, and even the household cleaners we use.  These toxic chemicals are stored in our body, and can cause you to feel “less than fabulous”. 

There are many so-called “Detox” products on the market but many are little more than plant fiber and bowel stimulants. What we really need to detoxify our bodies is to facilitate proper removal of waste from our bowel, liver, kidneys, and skin. These are our primary detox organs.

What keeps our detox organs from functioning optimally? 
Poor diet, poor sleep, not enough fresh fruits and vegetables, too much sugar, and too little exercise.   That’s it. Your body has remarkable healing abilities, but it needs the right combination of diet, sleep, and exercise to heal and keep you healthy.  It’s like keeping your car running well.  You have to change the oil at regular intervals, get regular tune-ups to maintain the engine, change the air filters when they are clogged and dirty, as well.

If you don’t have a proper water filter on your home water source then this spring may be a great time to explore your options. Secondly make a statement with your diet by eating organic whole vegetables and fruits daily. Increase vegetable intake to a minimum of 6 servings daily and keep fruit to 1 or 2 servings. Limit meat and high fat foods.

Exercise at least 30 minutes every day.  You don’t need to join an extreme bootcamp, but you need to find some form of physical exercise that you enjoy, even if it’s just walking

High cholesterol increases your risk of heart disease and heart attacks.

Even if you take medications to lower your cholesterol and your LDL cholesterol is already low, you are not out of the woods yet.

There is a new blood test called Cholesterol Fractionation or the Cholesterol VAP test that can tell if your LDL (bad) cholesterol is small and sticky, or large and fluffy.

If your LDL cholesterol is small and sticky, instead of large and fluffy, you have an even higher risk of heart disease. 

Small, sticky LDL causes inflammation in the cardiovascular system.  Cholesterol lowering medications will not change this.  The Naturopathic approach is an anti-inflammatory diet (see below), stress reduction, and natural remedies to lower the inflammation. What is Cardio CRP?

Cardio CRP is a measure of the level of C-Reactive Protein (CRP) in your cardiovascular system. The body’s production of CRP, which is part of the natural cycle of cell replenishment, rises when the body expects larger numbers of cells to require replacement. This occurs during an infection or after suffering an injury, for example.  A similar response and elevated CRP levels are also associated with general inflammation in the body.  Cardio CRP is the specific inflammation of the cardiovascular system, and appears to be correlated to heart disease risk. Inflammation (swelling) of the arteries has been linked to an increased risk of heart disease, heart attack, stroke, and peripheral arterial disease.

Why is it Important to Know Your Cardio CRP Number?

Most people know their total cholesterol number, but many doctors do not test for Cardio CRP levels. Elevated levels of Cardio CRP in your blood stream put you at high risk for heart disease, heart attack, and stroke. It is a better predictor of heart disease than cholesterol levels. If your cholesterol levels are low, but your Cardio CRP level is high, you are still at high risk for heart disease.  In the Harvard Women's Health Study, results of the Cardio CRP test were more accurate than cholesterol levels in predicting heart problems.  Naturopathic Medicine with Dr. Pulnik can help to lower Cardio CRP levels.

How Is Cardio CRP Measured?

Cardio CRP is measured with a simple blood test, which can be done at the same time your cholesterol is checked. Heart disease risk is determined based on your Cardio CRP test results.

Natural Ways to Reduce Cardio CRP Levels

1.    Change Your Diet.

We’ve all heard the old adage ‘you are what you eat’, but have you ever stopped to think exactly how true that is? Put simply, healthy eating is the key to wellbeing. We all have 100% control over what we put into our mouth.  Eating the Standard American Diet, aka the “SAD” diet leads to inflammation, obesity, diabetes, cancer, high cholesterol, heart disease, and more. Our food chain is saturated with processed food, junk food, trans-fats, high fructose corn syrup, genetically modified foods, cloned meat and milk, and is largely devoid of nutritional value.

Here are some tips to start changing your diet to a healthy, anti-inflammatory diet:

•    Get rid of processed cereals, breads, and sweets from your pantry

•    Switch to sprouted bread and cereal

•    Eat only organic vegetables, fruits, meat, milk, and poultry

•    Eat wild fish only, not farmed fish

•    Include a large organic green salad with your lunch and dinner every day

Here’s a recipe for a delicious anti-inflammatory smoothie you can make at home and drink every day!

 Ingredients:

•1.5 cups of chilled acai berry tea (infused green or herbal. You can substitute with another antioxidant -rich tea such as goji or pomegranate to your personal preference)

•1 tbsp of dried goji berries, soaked and rehydrated in the above cup of tea

•½ cup organic greens (spinach, kale or swiss chard)

•½ cup frozen organic raspberries or strawberries

•½-1 cup of ice

Blend all ingredients in a blender until smooth. Enjoy! (Notice that the color of this smoothie reflects the color of a healthy heart!)

2.     Get a Good Night’s Sleep-every night.

People who sleep poorly or do not get enough sleep have higher levels of inflammation, a risk factor for heart disease and stroke, researchers have found. Acute sleep deprivation leads to an increased production of inflammatory hormones and changes in blood vessel function.  (Ref. Science Daily Nov. 14, 2010)

3.     Exercise, and Lose Weight.

Find some form of exercise that you enjoy, and move your body every day. A pattern of regular exercise decreases long-term inflammation and Cardio CRP levels. According to Medline Plus, excess body fat triggers the release of certain hormones that increase inflammation. You are more likely to have high Cardio CRP if you are overweight.

4.    Don’t let stress kill you!

Chronic stress, inflammation, and heart disease are very closely related.

We all have a built-in stress response to help us react to perceived danger quickly and keep us alive, at least during those times when dinner meant an unavoidable battle with something like a saber-tooth tiger.

But in modern days, how many times a year do you actually have to literally run away from a saber-tooth tiger? More often than not, we wrestle with unseen threats, such as the fear of losing our job and the worries of losing our retirement fund, which often put our stress response on high alert.

That is not the original intention of the stress response though. It is meant mainly to help us cope with short-term acute stress, not chronic psychological stress that we now face almost every day. As a result, inflammatory chemicals such as cortisol are released in our bodies.  Chronic exposure to elevated levels of cortisol has a negative effect not just on the heart, but also your overall health. Coping with stress is one of the important ways to keep chronic inflammation at bay, and maintain a healthy heart. Yoga, meditation, and down time with family and friends can do wonders for your heart and lower inflammation.

How to Create Your Gratitude Journal in 8 Easy Steps

A Gratitude Journal

is a great way to cultivate and Attitude of Gratitude, and to keep yourself in a thankful and positive state of mind.

People with a strong sense of gratitude, love and appreciation don't necessarily have more than others; they aren't "luckier". They simply recognize and see more beauty in their lives. A 2003 study suggests that people who count their blessings are generally happier and healthier than people who don't.  If you ever feel as if anything in your life isn't "enough", try practicing an attitude of thankfulness. You might realize how good you have it after all.

FB Gratitude Journal 11-271.  On a daily basis, find something you are appreciative of or find something you are grateful for. Start a journal. You might even want to call it your appreciation journal or gratitude journal and go to it [and write] five minutes a day. You can find beautiful journals at your local bookstore, or online. Or, you can download a free Gratitude App on your smartphone.
2.  Be Thankful. Thankfulness is an attitude that you can practice and develop. Cultivating gratitude as the norm in your life will make keeping a gratitude journal much easier.
3.  Make it a rule to write down a certain number of things you are thankful for per day. Avoid repeating the same things. This will make writing in the journal more challenging as time goes on, but that's how your awareness and thankfulness will grow. You'll be challenging yourself to find new things to be thankful for that perhaps you never noticed before.

Example - I am grateful for my house. My house warms my body and shelters and protects me. It gives me a sense of relief knowing that there is always a comforting place to come back to.
4.  Write about extended material things in your life. These things vary from person to person depending on what you like and take interest in. For example, if you love to paint, you may be grateful for the paint that you have. Or, if you like music you may be grateful for your CD collections.
5.  Describe how you are grateful for yourself. You can start by feeling grateful to be alive at all. Then start writing about feeling grateful to have the body you have, even if you don't like everything. Avoid the trap of being grateful for something that is better than what other people have. Instead, compare whatever you are grateful for with how you would feel if you didn't have it at all.
6.  Think about your abilities. You may start with basic abilities like your ability to see, your ability to hear, your ability to walk. Then progress to the extended abilities that are unique to you. Think about skillful things like dancing, singing, writing, and features that make up your character like your listening skills, your skills in cheering up people, your skills in being a good friend.
7.  Consider the people in your life. Think about all the people you care about, like your parents, your friends, your significant other, and also your pets. Write why you are grateful for each person and how they make you feel. This helps you to appreciate them and see only the good in them. It's also good to write about the people that you don't really like and find a reason to appreciate them. This can be difficult as we don't really appreciate people we don't like but it can be very uplifting. It’s Back - Cold and Flu Season

 

No one wants to come down with a cold or the flu, but the season is back and it is important to know how to prepare. This article describes the difference between a cold and the flu, and adds in some history about influenza. The Naturopathic Flu Prevention Program is described, as well as proper hygiene practices, the story about flu vaccines, and some tips on what to do if you catch a cold or get the flu.

Cold and Flu season is back in Connecticut, bringing with it the triple tyrannies of stuffiness, cough, and achiness. Prevention is always the best medicine, but if you do get sick it is important to know whether you have a cold or the flu. 

Cold vs. Flu

The flu is short for influenza, a generic name given to any number of specific viruses. Flu viruses are referred to by number (e.g. H1N1) or sometimes by name (e.g. Bird Flu or Swine Flu). In any given year, certain strains of flu are expected to be more prevalent than others. From this expectation, the current version of the generally available flu vaccine is developed and made available to the public. 

Symptomatically, the flu is worse than the common cold, and symptoms such as fever, body aches, extreme tiredness, and dry cough are more common and intense. Colds are usually milder, with symptoms more likely to be a runny or stuffy nose. In extreme cases, particularly in those with compromised immune systems, influenza can result in serious health problems such as pneumonia, bacterial infections, or hospitalizations. 

In the early 1900’s, a great influenza pandemic swept the country and the globe. It is estimated that 675,000 people died in the U.S. over a four year period. Proper Hygiene

 Practicing good hygiene is an important step to protect yourself from winter colds and flu. 

  • Wash your hands often with soap and water or clean with alcohol-based hand cleaners. Wash for 15-20 seconds.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread this way.
  • Try to avoid close contact with sick people. .
  • Stay home for at least 7 days after your symptoms begin or until you have been symptom-free for 24 hours, whichever is longer. This is to keep you from infecting others and spreading the flu or virus further.
  • Wipe down toys and surfaces used by others with a household disinfectant according to directions on the product label
  • Avoid sweets. Sugar may impair your immune system.
  • Get adequate rest and drink plenty of fluids.

 

The Trouble with Flu Vaccines

 

 Because flu vaccines are developed every year before the flu season actually strikes, it is not possible to know with certainty which flu viruses against which to vaccinate. This means the flu vaccine that is widely available is not always effective in preventing the flu, common colds, or viral respiratory infections. 

Dangers of traditional flu shots include life-threatening allergic reactions, neurological damage, Guille-Barre Syndrome (a sometimes irreversible paralysis), and the fact that the vaccine can actually give you the flu. Additionally, flu shots provide only temporary immunity. If you get a flu shot now, any preventative effects may wear off by March, leaving you once more susceptible to the flu. 

If you do get a cold or the flu, try the “wet sock” treatment below.   This is a great at-home treatment that is safe for all ages. The wet sock treatment is described in a separate article. You can also help yourself by eating properly. There is a great, natural chicken soup recipe (yes, it works!) in this blog, also below.

                                                           The Wet Sock Treatment

 The Wet Sock Treatment is a traditional Naturopathic remedy which is safe for all ages.

The wet sock treatment is best if repeated for three nights in a row, or as instructed by your Naturopathic physician.

Indications: Sore throat or any inflammation or infection of the throat, neck pain, ear infections, headaches, migraines, nasal congestion, upper respiratory infections, coughs, bronchitis, and sinus infections.

Supplies:

1 pair white cotton socks

1 pair thick wool socks

Towel

Warm bath or warm foot bath

Directions:

*    Take a pair of cotton socks and soak them completely with cold water. Be sure to wring the socks out thoroughly so they do not drip.

*    Warm the feet first. This is very important as the treatment will not be as effective and could be harmful if your feet are not warmed first. Warming can be accomplished by soaking the feet in warm water for at least 5-10 minutes or taking a warm bath for 5-10 minutes.

*    Dry off feet and body with a dry towel.

*    Place cold wet socks on feet. Cover with thick wool socks. Go directly to bed. Avoid getting chilled.

*    Keep the socks on overnight. You will find that the wet cotton socks will be dry in the morning.

Effects of the Wet Sock Treatment: This treatment acts to reflexively increase the circulation and decrease congestion in the upper respiratory passages, head, and throat. It has a sedating action and many patients report that they sleep much better during the treatment. This treatment is also effective for pain relief and increases the healing response during acute infections.

Remember, if you or a family member develops a fever, cough, body aches, headache, chills, diarrhea, or vomiting, call us ASAP to receive proper evaluation and treatment.

 

Dr. Pulnik's Cold & Flu-Fighting Chicken Soup

Chicken Soup

Chicken soup may be the best food to consume while suffering with colds and the flu.  According to the Mayo Clinic, chicken soup will speed the mucus through the nose to help relieve congestion. Chicken soup acts as an anti-inflammatory by inhibiting the movement of certain immune system cells that participate in the body's inflammation response. Homemade soup may have an edge over some canned varieties.

 

Ingredients

  • 2 Tbsp coconut oil
  • Salt and pepper
  • 1 whole chicken
  • 3 large leeks, cleaned and sliced thinly
  • 3 carrots, sliced in 1/4-inch rounds
  • 3 celery sticks, chopped 1/4-inch
  • 6 cloves garlic, thinly sliced
  • 2 tsp fresh thyme, minced
  • 2 whole sprigs fresh rosemary, 1 (about 1 tsp) minced
  • 2 Tbsp flour
  • 1 cup white wine, sherry or vermouth
  • 6 cups low sodium chicken stock
  • 2 bay leaves
  • 4 cups winter greens, chard, kale, beet greens, sliced
  • 1/4 cup parsley, chopped

Instructions

  1. In a 6 quart Dutch oven or comparable heavy-bottomed pot heat coconut oil or other high-heat oil over medium-high heat until shimmering but not yet smoking. Season chicken with salt and pepper inside and out. Place chicken in pot and sear on all sides until golden brown, turn when each side removes easily from the bottom of the pot. Remove to a plate, and reduce heat to medium.
  2. Remove all but 2 tablespoons of oil in pot, you can reserve the drippings and rendered chicken fat for dumplings or just discard. Saute leeks, carrots and celery until soft, about 4-5 minutes. Add half of the thinly sliced garlic and minced herbs, stirring for another 30 seconds. Sprinkle with flour and stir for another minute.
  3. Using a heavy wooden spoon, scrape off the browned bits from the bottom of the pot as you add the wine. As the bottom becomes clean add chicken stock. Return chicken and any accumulated drippings to pot. Cover and cook until chicken is tender and will easily pull apart, about 40-50 minutes. If using chopped potatoes, turnips, parsnips or sweet potatoes, add after 20 minutes.
  4. Remove chicken and whole herbs from pot, discard herbs. Remove meat from chicken, discarding bones. Return chicken meat to pot and stir in along with greens and parsley. Cook until greens are tender, about 5 minutes. Serve hot, alone or with noodles, or wild rice.

Serves 6 to 8.

As we enter into the time of the Metal Element, Autumn, which is comprised of the Yin/Yang pair Lung and Large Intestine we are subject to pathologies specifically affecting these organs.  In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) our seasons are associated with “Elements”.  Water is associated with Winter, Wood is associated with Spring, Fire is associated with Summer, Late Summer is associated with Earth and Fall is associated with Autumn.  These elements are all comprised of Yin/Yang pairs of meridians, which are lines of energy that pass through your body.  They are named for the organs through which they pass.  Like their corresponding organs, they too have specific functions that differ from their analogous organ responsibilities but just like our organs the meridians also have to work collectively to allow our bodies to carry on its normal functions so it can be free of disease. 

The Elements are made up of the following Yin/Yang pairs: Water is made up of Kidney/Urinary Bladder. Wood is made up of Liver/Gall Bladder. Fire is made up of Heart/Small Intestine. Finally, Earth is made up of Spleen and Stomach.  You will notice that the Yin organs are solid where as the Yang organs are hollow.  The Yang is considered to be outside and the Yin is inside.  Yin is transformative where as Yang is more involved with the processes of storage or transportation.  It is for these reasons acupuncturists and herbalists focus on treating Yin meridians more than Yang.  I will write more on this subject in a future article.

 In TCM colds and influenza’s or flu’s are considered invasions of the body.  In TCM we also believe that the body is made up of several layers.  Therefore, as a pathogen invades your body it must enter first the outer layer, which we call the “exterior”.  Now, just like when your home is being invaded by a thief, you want to open your doors and windows to let the thief leave, and not lock them in over night.  In the case of your body being the house, its skin has pores that are representative of the doors and windows.  So what opens the pores?  Any herb that is warm such as ginger, cayenne, capsicum, or black pepper.  You can also accomplish opening the pores by producing sweat.  Take a steam bath, or a sauna, or try exercising aerobically to force sweat from your body.  All of these methods work to eliminate the pathogen from your body when the pathogen is still in the exterior of your body. 

So how long does the pathogen stay in your exterior?  This can vary depending on many factors.  The virulence of the pathogen, your constitution (your immune system’s ability to fight the pathogen) and finally, additional environmental factors as well.  In general, one has about 24 hours to eliminate the pathogen before it goes further into one’s interior.  Once in the interior it will take several weeks to get it out of one’s system. 

One remedy for eliminating the pathogen when its still in the exterior that was shared with me by a medical doctor from Spain that I knew in the mid sixties, goes as follows: 

Take a tablespoon of sugar and chase it down with a tablespoon of olive oil and chase that down with a cup of scalding hot milk. This all takes place right before you get ready for bed.  You dress in sweats both top and bottoms, you wear socks and gloves and a scull cap if you have one.  You also put extra blankets on the bed.  After consuming the remedy you go right to bed.  Within the first hour after consuming the remedy your body will create a furnace within you.  It will make you sweat like you never have sweated before.  Your sweat pants and sweatshirt will be drenched with your sweat.  You will probably not sleep well because you’ll be too hot.  However, in the morning your cold will be gone and with a little more rest you will be yourself again.  This remedy was taught me when I was a teenager.  It has always worked for me.  Clearly, if you are lactose intolerant this remedy is not for you. However, it is just one of many remedies that can encourage increased internal heat that ultimately can raise your core body temperature up sufficiently to cause you to sweat. 

In TCM we have a variety of herbal preparations as well as acupuncture treatments that can eliminate one’s cold or flu.  Don’t let this seasonal change get to you in such a way that you feel like there is nothing that can be done.  You can do much to end your sickness, especially if you act early.

The Benefits of Massage Therapy

Many studies over the years have revealed that breast cancer massage offers both emotional and physical benefits to patients. The massage helps to reduce the intake of pain medicines as well. Patients tend to feel less anxious and depressed. Breast cancer massage has some very amazing results such as the increased levels of a brain chemical called "dopamine". Warming Fall Salad

 Autumn foods in Chinese Medicine have a warming and nourishing nature, in contrast to the cooler foods of summer.  The autumnal bounty of the harvest offers some of the freshest and most deliciously satisfying salads and soups of all the seasons.

 

This Fall Salad is one of my favorites, made with seasonal ingredients.  Even though it is not served heated, it can actually warm you up on chilly days.

 

 

 

Rutabaga-Parsley Salad with Caramelized Walnuts

 

Ingredients:

1 cup slightly salter boiling water

½ bunch fresh, organic flat parsley

1-2 large rutabagas or turnips

1 cup organic baby spinach greens

½ cup caramelized walnuts

1 organic Granny Smith apple, sliced

 

Directions:

Arrange baby spinach greens on a platter.

Slice rutabagas/turnips into rounds, and cook in boiling water until tender. Remove and arrange on top of the baby spinach greens.

Plunge the parsley into the salted boiling water for 2 minutes. Remove and chop finely.

Sprinkle on top of the rutabagas.

Top with sliced Granny Smith apple slices and caramelized walnuts.

Drizzle salad dressing on top.

 

Salad Dressing:

½ c. balsamic vinegar

¾ cup organic extra-virgin olive oil, cold pressed

1 clove garlic, minced

Fresh herbs-your choice

½ tsp salt
Pepper to taste

Saving Lives with Early Detection

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, breast cancer is the most common form of cancer in women and the second leading cause of cancer deaths in wmen. In 2006, 191,410 women were diagnosed with breast cancer and 40,820 died from breast cancer in the United States.

Breast thermography is a state-of-the-art screening non-invasive procedure that captures images of the breast to aid in early the early temperature variation, conditions that occur before a noticeable lump is detected by self-exam or mammogram. “That’s why adding Thermography to your annual breast screening routine can help with early detection”, notes Dr. Pulnik.

Thermography is based on the principle of detection of irregular patterns in the breast,the slight increase in heat that is almost always generated with inflammation and blood vessel activity which occurs in pre-cancerous tissue. A scanning-like infrared camera is used to measure body surface temperature, presenting the information as a digitalized image. The procedure has been approved by the FDA since 1982 for screening breast cancer. Unlike mammograms, there is no touching at all, so the exam is completely pain free. It also involved no radiation at all, as does conventional mammogram technology.

Studies have shown that the earliest detection of breast cancer generally occurs when several testing techniques are used in combination. “It is important to note that thermography is not an alternative or substitute for a mammogram, but should be used in conjunction with the recommended mammogram guidelines” explains Dr. Pulnik.

Women of all ages should use a combination of techniques, on a regular basis, including breast self-exam, yearly physical exam by your physician, thermography and mammography.

Other common areas of the body that can be visualized by Thermography are the sinuses, carotid arteries, upper body, and lower body, screening for selcarotid artery disease, deep vein thrombosis, coronary artery disease, back pain, carpel tunnes syndrome, and other conditions.

My Visit To A Naturopathic Doctor

Conventional medicine has been a huge source of frustration for my entire adult life. Over the last 10+ years I’ve had some intelligent, sincere, well-meaning MD’s attempt to treat my ongoing medical issues. The problem? Conventional medicine and prescription drugs have limitations that failed to treat me as a whole person.

Enter . . . the naturopathic doctor.

A visit to the naturopath....

Before moving to North Carolina, I decided one of my first orders of business upon arriving would be finding a naturopathic doctor who could offer a brand new treatment approach. Prescription medications have caused an asymmetry in my system, inadvertently suppressing my immune system, contributing to hormonal imbalances, and leading to various digestive issues. My poor 33-year old body deserves better.

In an effort to get away from conventional medicine, I did hours of research, tried natural remedies, and spent tons of money on supplements with no lasting improvements to my conditions. In short, because MD’s hadn’t worked, and I was at the end of my expertise, I was ready to turn things over to a new sort of qualified professional.

I was shocked right from the start; the naturopathic doctor spent more time with me in my first three appointments than any of my doctors over the last 10 years. Homeopathy: Beyond Flat Earth Medicine, is a quick read that gives a very clear introduction to the science of homeopathy. (Its use of the term “flat earth” makes reference to how people once believed the world was flat.)

Homeopathy vs. Allopathy

A naturopathic plan is developed for the patient after a few visits. One treatment modality my naturopath uses is homeopathy. The Greek roots of the word mean “similar suffering.” In essence, the theory and mode of treatment in homeopathy is that a substance can be used as medicine to treat a person experiencing symptoms that a healthy person would experience if taking the same substance. This idea of treating like with like is very intriguing to me. Conventional medicine treats disease with substances that cause symptoms different from those a patient is experiencing, and is thus called allopathy (allo meaning “other”).

Homeopathic remedies do not treat specific disease conditions, but rather the entire person and all his/her symptoms. One of my doctor’s pamphlets states, “Homeopathic medicine is a highly individualized therapy that stimulates the body to heal itself.” That just makes plain ole sense to me. Instead of visiting numerous specialists who treated my different issues in isolation, my naturopath can now look at my entire system and treat it with ONE homeopathic remedy.

Homeopathic remedy

Homeopathic remedies come in tiny, BB-sized pellets that are dissolved under the tongue. They are highly diluted, non-toxic, natural medicines made from plants and minerals. If your child or pet accidentally ate the entire contents of a bottle it would not be dangerous. Prescription medications are quite the opposite, but that’s a topic and article for another day!

I am expecting a gradual improvement in my conditions. I know that the extremely diluted homeopathic remedies are designed to produce a slow, deep level of healing. Many times after achieving a certain level of improvement, homeopathic remedies can be discontinued. This is completely different than prescription drugs which offer an instant, short-lived masking of the symptoms, but no solution. Worse yet, many drugs have decreased effectiveness over time, leading to more frequent, intense relapses, until a new prescription is necessary. Above all, I want my body to heal itself and reestablish balance . . . which prescription drugs and allopathic medicine have failed to deliver.

In addition, homeopathic treatments are very inexpensive. The initial consultation appointments cost a bit up front, that’s because the doctor spends so much time getting to know your issues so he/she can put together a personalized plan. I was prepared to shell out an arm and a leg for my homeopathic remedy and supplements; I had no idea what they would cost. I actually ended up returning home and bragging to Matt about how cheap it all was. (I got 1 homeopathic remedy, 3 supplements, and one “just in case” treatment for LESS than one bottle of generic brand prescription medication I recently refilled!) Every penny spent will be worth it if my body gets back on a healthy path!

I just had my third visit in two weeks with my new fabulous naturopath, and am now eagerly awaiting some positive results from the homeopathic remedy and three supplements she recommended. (I have ALREADY noticed one of my issues improving after taking my remedy/supplements for ONE DAY!)

My naturopathic plan is a work in progress, which will be tweaked and modified based on my body’s response to treatment.

I see naturopathic medicine as a more health-oriented alternative after experiencing so much frustration with the limitations, high costs, and side-effects of conventional medicine. If I see great results from homeopathy and naturopaths, I will never look back. I’ll update again with treatment progress and more in-depth information about homeopathy as I learn more.

Ragweed Allergy Season is Here

As many allergy sufferers know all too well, the unofficial kickoff to the ragweed allergy season is here; starting around August 15th, and continuing through October.  For the 36 million unlucky Americans who suffer from ragweed allergies, this will mean more frequent sneezing and stuffy or runny nose along with itchy and watering eyes, commonly known as allergic rhinitis.  Following close on the heels of allergy suffering caused by the record high tree and grass pollen counts earlier this year, ragweed allergies can dampen the enjoyment of Connecticut’s most colorful season.

Pollen released from the ragweed plant is the airborne allergen most responsible for late summer and early fall allergy symptoms.  Remarkably, an average ragweed plant can produce over one million-pollen grains every day and up to one billion pollen grains in the lifetime of the plant.  The pollen grains are extremely lightweight and can be wind swept up to 400 miles away from their original source.  The hardy ragweed plant grows virtually everywhere; in fields, along roadsides, in vacant city lots, yards, etc.   Ragweed is abundant in every region of the United States, so whether you are in the city or in the country, you will be exposed to ragweed pollen.

"Ragweed is a stubborn plant that can grow anywhere. Ragweed pollen is an important cause of fall allergy symptoms," said Richard Nicklas, MD, and Fellow of the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology (AAAAI). 

ragweed pollenEven though your windows might be closed to keep the pollen outside, be aware that ragweed pollen can get inside your house by sticking to your clothing, shoes, bags, and pets.  Peak pollen times are usually between 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.

While not everyone exposed to ragweed will develop an allergy to the pollen, contact with the ragweed pollen can stimulate a reaction in some people that can worsen other symptoms.  People with sinusitis may experience an increase in congestion.  Asthma sufferers may experience an increase in wheezing, shortness of breath, or a cough.

  • More than one-third of allergy sufferers said allergic rhinitis decreases their work effectiveness

As the seasons change, so do our circadian rhythms; the natural, annual cycles associated with our connection to the earth.  The rhythms of our bodies follow the ebb and flow of energy in our universe, much like earth’s oceans ebb and flow with the tides.  The balance of energy in our bodies changes as we experience these seasonal rhythms.charles.jpg

We are much more likely to remain illness-free by adjusting to the changing seasonal energy.  This is true with each of the seasonal transitions, and as we are about to progress to autumn (on the autumnal equinox, September 22nd), it is time to begin adjusting to the upcoming change in seasonal energy. 

Autumn is the time of the Metal Element.  The Metal Element is made up of the Lung and Large Intestine, a Yin Yang pair.  It symbolically represents a time for transitioning from summer to winter.  Autumn’s climate is associated with dryness, and the seasonal power of autumn is one of balance. Autumn’s associative taste is Pungent. 

The Metal Element is also the mother of Water and the son of Earth.

So what do all these associations with the Metal Element mean?

In oriental medicine, keeping a proper energetic balance is the key to maintaining your health.  It follows that if you are not healthy there is a direct correlation to an imbalance in your body’s energy.  Acupuncturists, through pulse and tongue diagnosis, can determine the cause of the imbalance and rectify the situation employing a variety of techniques.

One of the biggest challenges most people face is learning how to care for themself. It requires a delicate balance between what often feels like polar opposites. I’ve spent a lifetime studying self-care. And I’ve come to the conclusion that good self-care is the single most important aspect of our health, period. The programming of self-sacrifice leads ultimately to health-destroying sentiments, such as guilt, resentment, anger, and other emotions linked to high levels of stress hormones. Self-sacrifice feels wrong to us on a soul level—our spirit gravitates naturally to joy and happiness. That’s why self-sacrifice ultimately makes us sick and keeps us stuck in dead-end situations.How well we care for ourselves as adults is often determined in part by how well our mothers cared for us (and themselves). Ultimately, however, it’s our responsibility to learn how to optimally care for ourselves regardless of what happened (or didn’t) with our mothers. We refine this process throughout our entire lives.The key is knowing in your heart that the best way you can care for others is by caring for yourself. I know this requires a paradigm shift for many of you! Despite what you’ve been brought up to believe, caring for oneself is not an example of a zero sum model—where your gain is someone else’s loss.            Seven Simple Steps For Enhancing Your Health

 

                                Through Self-Care


Step 1 - Tap into the stream of healing energy regularly.
Your body is connected to a healing stream of energy (also known as chi, prana, light, Source, and God) that you can absorb at will. All you need to do is be aware of it and be open to receive it! This is the basis for the healing power of prayer. A particularly powerful way to absorb this healing energy simply involves sitting with your limbs uncrossed while listening to classical music and receiving a healing stream of energy. The practice, which is available to everyone, is associated with many well-documented physical and emotional healings from all over the world that cannot be explained by conventional medicine.

Step 2 - Know that you are your own best mother.
Treat yourself like an ideal mother would by talking to yourself in a wonderful, nurturing way and providing for yourself that which you wish you had received from your own mother. For example, say to yourself, “Darling, I see that you’re tired. Why don’t you lie down and take a nice nap. When you get up, we’ll have a nice cup of hot tea” or “I see that you need a break. How about a nice hot bath and a good book.” You get the picture.
Step 3 - Do something pleasurable each and every day.
Taking time for pleasure and fun decreases the stress hormones cortisol and adrenalin, which, over time, are responsible for heart disease, cancer, and most chronic diseases such as arthritis and high blood pressure. Plus when you take time for enjoyment, you’ll be able to approach arduous tasks with more energy and a better outlook.
Step 4 - Breathe deeply and fully on a regular basis.
Breathing in fully through your nose instantly engages the rest and restore parasympathetic nervous system and helps the body metabolize stress hormones. Put Post-it notes on your phone, your computer, and your bathroom mirror. Write BREATHE in beautiful letters that uplift and remind you to breathe fully.
Step 5 - Get support for self-care.
Find a self-care buddy and agree that each of you will hold the other accountable for taking care of herself. Start with my suggestions and add your own ideas. Brag to each other about how well you’re doing and especially how well you are caring for yourself. Plan to call your friend whenever you start to slip into over-care of others.
Step 6 - Use the incredible power of no.
When someone asks you to do something you don’t really want to do, say NO! This is especially important if saying “no” makes you feel guilty or unworthy. In most cases this means you’re letting the needs of others overshadow your own. Only you know how much you can handle without over-committing. Over time, you’ll strengthen your “no” muscle and also attract friends who support your need to set healthy boundaries. Remember, saying “no” to someone else usually means saying “yes” to yourself!Step 7 - Don’t wait for permission to start taking care of yourself.
Believe me, no one is going to give it to you, although I know how much you desperately want someone to do so! How well I remember being on call in the hospital watching the nurses give each other breaks. I yearned for one of my colleagues to give me permission to take a break after being up all night. But no one did because the culture of medicine (particularly a surgical specialty) is so macho. Far too many women get sick because it’s the only socially acceptable way to get the self-care they require. I think we can do better, don’t you? Prepare to be called “selfish” when you start taking better care of yourself. And when someone calls you that, celebrate! After all, taking care of yourself is prevention at the most fundamental level.

 

Affirmations - The Next Level In Self Care


For many, many years, I have said affirmations every day. They work along with the Law of Attraction and help to change your vibrational output. Because of the Law of Attraction, this vibrational output draws the people and circumstances into your life based on your thoughts and beliefs. They can be used for every area of your life. So if you are about to embark on a new career, if you want to begin to live a healthier lifestyle, or if you want to update or upgrade your relationships, and so forth, I suggest saying affirmations. It’s a subtle but powerful way to receive support from the universe—plus it feels good. And that is the beginning of all positive changes! When you can hold the feeling that an affirmation brings, it will change your point of attraction for the better. 
It’s as simple as repeating twice a day into a mirror everyday for 30 days: “I accept myself unconditionally right now”.

What is Stress?

  

Stress is the body's reaction to any change that requires an adjustment or response. The body reacts to these changes with physical, mental, and emotional responses.

Stress is a normal part of life. Many events that happen to you and around you -- and many things that you do yourself -- put stress on your body. You can experience stress from your environment, your body, and your thoughts.


How Does Stress Affect Health?

The human body is designed to experience stress and react to it. Stress can be positive, keeping us alert and ready to avoid danger. Stress becomes negative when a person faces continuous challenges without relief or relaxation between challenges. 

Stress that continues without relief can lead to a condition called distress -- a negative stress reaction. Distress can lead to physical symptoms including headaches, upset stomach, elevated blood pressure, chest pain, and problems sleeping. Research suggests that stress also can bring on or worsen certain symptoms or diseases.

Chronic stress can have severe effects on the body’s systems. For instance, it can suppress the immune system, increase the risk of cardiovascular disease, be instrumental in the person becoming infertile and accelerate aging. Studies have proved that stress can cause both mental and physiological problems like obesity, diabetes, hair loss, hyperthyroidism, sexual dysfunction, ulcers and even cancer. According to research, about 90% doctors visits focus on treatment for stress-related symptoms.

Stress also becomes harmful when people use alcohol, tobacco, or drugs to try and relieve their stress. Unfortunately, instead of relieving the stress and returning the body to a relaxed state, these substances tend to keep the body in a stressed state and cause more problems. 

Consider the following:

43% of all adults suffer adverse health effects from stress.

75% to 90% of all doctor's office visits are for stress related ailments and complaints.

Stress can play a part in problems such as headaches, high blood pressure, heart problems, diabetes, skin conditions, asthma, arthritis, depression and anxiety.

The Occupational Safety and Health administration (OSHA) delcared stress a hazard of the workplace. Stress costs american industry more than $300 billion annually.


While it is virtually impossible to get rid of stress, it is possible to control the effects of stress on the body to some extent through natural methods and relaxation techniques like massage therapy, acupuncture, yoga, meditation, relaxing music, and deep breathing.

  • The fertility rate in the United States has been declining for the past few decades.  The fertility rate is the number of children an average woman bears over the course of her life. The replacement rate is 2.1. If the average woman has more children than that, population grows. Today, America's total fertility rate is 1.93, according to the latest figures from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention; it hasn't been above the replacement rate in a sustained way since the early 1970s. Infertility is defined as the inability to become pregnant after a year or more of sperm insemination or well-timed, unprotected vaginal intercourse. Infertility may be a temporary or a permanent condition; this depends on the available treatments, the cause, and the fertility of the partner at any particular point in time. Infertility is often incorrectly considered "the woman's problem". To improve the couple's chances of conception a child together, both the man and the woman should be evaluated, and treated, if necessary, Because conception is a complicated process, it depends upon several factors. There are many potential causes for infertility or reproductive problems.  Chronic illnesses, as well as their treatments, can lead to fertility problems.  Illnesses like diabetes and hypothyroidism can cause fertility problems. Insulin, antidepressants, and thyroid hormones may lead to irregular menstrual cycles, for example.  Premature ovarian failure has become a common cause of infertility in younger women, often diagnosed as “unexplained infertility”. Environmental toxins and xenoestrogens in foods are known to cause hormone disruption, and free radical damage to both ovaries in women and sperm production in men.  Certain toxins such as phthalates may be linked to genital abnormalities in boys. Products that contain phthalates include food packaging, cosmetics, make-up, soaps, fragrances, shampoos, hairspray, nail polish, pharmaceuticals, nutritional supplements, herbal remedies, building materials, vinyl flooring, paints, adhesives, detergents, solvents, lubricating oils, plastic bags, garden hoses, automobiles, children’s toys, modeling clay, glow sticks, cleaning products, and as inert ingredients in insecticides. In many instances phthalates are not identified on product labels. 40% of infertility can be due to male factors, and acupuncture also treats male partners of women trying to conceive. Medication used to treat peptic ulcers or hypertension can cause male factor infertility, including problems with sperm production or their ability to fertilize the egg.  In men, average sperm concentration went from 72 million/ml in 2001 to 52 million/ml in 2011. When sperm concentration drops below 40 million/ml, conception becomes difficult. Researchers agree that diet, lifestyle, and exposure to chemicals are causing the worldwide decline. Fertility issues are environmental issues Couples experiencing difficulty conceiving may be referred to a fertility specialist for evaluation.  Typically, blood testing, genetic testing, and sperm testing are done to determine if there are any medical or hormonal abnormalities that need to be treated. Currently, there are several medical treatments for infertility performed by MDs who specialize in Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART).  These treatments are typically hormones to induce ovulation, IUI or intrauterine insemination, which is a procedure in which sperm are placed directly into the uterine cavity near the time of ovulation and IVF, or in-vitro fertilization, which is a procedure that involves retrieving eggs and sperm from the bodies of the male and female partners and placing them together in a laboratory dish to enhance fertilization. Fertilized eggs are then transferred several days later into the female partner's uterus where implantation and embryo development will hopefully occur as in a normal pregnancy. Success rates with IUI can vary from 5% to 20% for a single cycle, depending on the age and health of the couple.   With several IUI cycles, the conception rate can be even higher. According to the American Pregnancy Association, the success rate of conception with IVF is 10%-35%, again depending on the age and health status of the couple. Both IUI and IVF procedures can cost several thousand dollars per cycle or treatment, and are not always covered by insurance. From the viewpoint of Traditional Chinese Acupuncture and Naturopathic Medicine, other factors contributing to infertility include imbalances in the energy meridians of the body, toxic overload, and lifestyle factors such as poor diet, stress, and lack of proper sleep. Acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine are affordable therapies that have been used safely and effectively alongside with IUI and IVF, as well as a stand-alone treatment for infertility. Studies have shown that acupuncture can improve the success rate of IVF by 40%-60%.  The typical cost for an Acupuncture session is only $85.00.   • A recent study has verified that hormone replacement therapy, including "bioidentical" hormones, can cause breast cancer and increase your sisk of dying from breast cancer. Los Angeles Times (latimes.com) - Study Upholds Breast Cancer Mortality For Hormone Replacement -(Saturday, March 30, 2013) In the nearly 11 years since researchers first rang alarm bells that women on hormone replacement therapy faced an increased risk of breast cancer, some have suggested that taking estrogen and progestin to treat symptoms of menopause might not be so dangerous after all. Though it was generally agreed that woman who took the two hormones to curb their hot flashes and night sweats upped their chances of developing the disease, many studies suggested that the cancers the women developed were less likely to be deadly. A new analysis of data from the Women's Health Initiative now casts doubt on those findings. The study, published Friday by the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, concludes that the prognosis for cancers related to hormone replacement therapy is just as dire as for other breast cancers. As a result, women who turn to the treatment are more likely to die of breast cancer than their peers who don't take hormones.
