Sitting on the deck this beautiful morning, looking at the last of the summer flowers, my thoughts are somber and reflective of a morning 10 years ago, which feels like it was just yesterday.
I was off from work that day, September 11, 2001, and I was starting my fall cleaning in the kitchen, with the TV on.
Around 8:55am the phone rang. It was my sister, who lived in upstate New York and took the train in to Manhattan every day for work. She had not gone in to work that day, either, but her husband did.
She asked “do you have the TV on? Look at what’s happening” ! I dropped my coffee cup as I watched in horror and disbelief as I saw the North Tower billowing out smoke, with the tail of an airplane sticking out of the upper part of the building. Then I saw the second plane hit the South tower. I was speechless, and my sister was on the phone crying.
We had just taken our eldest daughter to Savanna College of Art and Design to start college, and our neice was also starting college Florida at Embry Riddle. We could not get my daughter or neice on the phone. We had no way of knowing if they were OK.
Everything was chaos, the Pentagon was on fire and another plane had crashed in Pennsylvania. Now, I had grown up during the Vietnam War and seen some terrible things on TV, and Desert Storm. But nothing hit the very center of my heart like this did.
My sister’s husband came home 48 hours later, covered in white dust, and we finally got thru to our daughter, who said “How could you leave me here like this”. The next 2 years were very difficult for her, every time she got on an airplane to come home for the holidays or at the end of a semester.
It was hard for us too. Knowing that this could happen again, at any time, to anyone. We all went back to our lives, our work, our families. But the world had changed in 1 day, never to be the same again.
I would like to dedicate a Peace Offering to you, and especially those who lost friends and loved ones on 9/11.
